Labor Day

If our mothers never went into labor none of us would be here. Labor means work; even the word sounds hard, because it is.

Labor Day is just around the corner. A day to celebrate and honor the working people, hardworking people.

We work to pay bills, feed our families, pay our taxes; we work to live. Adulthood kicks us onto the hamster wheel of life. Work, rest, repeat; it can be exhausting. Some work three jobs just to put food on the table, to buy an extra loaf of bread. But let’s be honest, to most of us nothing is extra. Labor Day honors the everyday working people, the ones down in the trenches.

This Labor Day, we honor ourselves, the ones who contribute to our neighborhoods, communities and thrive in spite of hardships. The ones who roll up their sleeves, give it all we’ve got not because it’s easy, but because the end point gets us through another day. But let’s not only celebrate a day of well-earned rest, let us remember WHY it was made a federal holiday. It was only when the cries of those who came before us were finally heard did fair hours, fair pay and safe working conditions become possible. A vivid reminder “We the people...” have a voice. We, the hard-working everyday people, make the wheel turn.

So, sit back, put your feet up, enjoy your day of rest and most of all don’t forget to thank your mother!

Happy Labor Day!
